River Road Coffees Creates Organic Blend
Local Coffee Company imports beans from Indonesia and implements organic practices.

(Baton Rouge, LA, July 1, 2009) - River Road Coffees has announced the launch of a new, organic blend of coffees called "Café de la Terre." The new blend is roasted, packaged, and distributed from the Baton Rouge plant. Café de la Terre is available in regular "C’est Bon" and decaf, "Decafeine."

River Road is the first local coffee company to introduce an organic blend. "We worked hard to secure the right bean from the right location," says John Melancon, one of the owners of River Road. "And then you’ve got to make sure everything stays organic—straight up-from bean to cup-and that’s not easy," he says.

Although Melancon will not disclose details, he does reveal that River Road Coffees currently incorporates their organic beans from Sumatra, Indonesia. "The organic beans come from farms that do not use fertilizer or pesticides, reducing the farm’s impact on the environment," he explains.

Locally the production process includes using only organic cleaners and other organic products from start to finish. "We have some very strict requirements for our green coffee beans, and we’re not willing to sacrifice our signature taste or quality for price or convenience," says Ian, John’s son and Co-Owner of River Road Coffees.

But price and convenience are still part of the River Road brand. Today you can purchase a bag of Café de la Terre Organic at many grocers in the area, including Whole Foods, at a price that’s in line with their other classic blends. Other organic roasts and flavors are planned for the future as well.

The Melancons are excited about the future of the organic blend. "We have always provided a good, honest product at a fair price to our retail and our office clients. The organic blend gives us the opportunity to introduce a more environmentally conscious, great-tasting option for our customers," says Ian.
